valley giant outperforms expectations. here's kcbs financial reporter jason brooks. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, michelle. good morning, frank. some good news for a change coming from hewlett-packard. the company's earnings report for its fiscal 1st quarter giving the market a boost after it topped expectations on earnings and revenue profit of $1.2 billion, revenue of 28.4 billion. even though those numbers were down from last year, they are still better than expected and it showed some positive momentum for the company after its worst fiscal year in its history. no major layoff news in this report. no news that major write-downs on bad acquisitions and no news of any big strategic changes for the company. as a result, its stock is up 7% in the early going. mortgage rates have started to head a little higher over the past several weeks. freddie mac says the average rate on 30-year loans at 3.56%. that's three basis points higher than the prior week. 15-year loans staying steady for the third week at 2.77%. even though rates have b
